Shield still shines out of the box

We've long considered the face of MFA to be the very faces of our dedicated employees and farmer/owners. But, if you ask most people in this cooperative's trade territory what first comes to mind when they hear "MFA," they'll tell you it's that red, white and blue shield with its stars and bold M-F-A. As far as logos go, the shield is truly an icon.

We kept that in mind as we gave thought to updating the MFA logo.

While we wouldn't think of changing the shield, we did want to give your cooperative logo a more modern look. You've been accustomed to seeing the shield in a box for the past 30 years. The new logo removes the box. The crossbar of the A has been replaced by a red stroke that arcs up and to the right-upward toward growth. You'll see the new logo first on stationery and vehicle decals. Signage and other more permanent displays will be replaced on an as-needed basis.

$10,000 in groceries and an at-home tailgate package draw interest

One giveaway down and another one in progress for Missouri's part of www.farmersfeedus.org. Earlier this year, winners of the "Free Groceries for a Year!" promotion were drawn from some 93,000 Missouri consumer registrants. They are:
•    Carol Lipsky, Kearney (just northeast of Kansas City)
•    Lois Scudero, St. Paul (just northwest of St. Louis)

Missouri farmers and industry representatives presented each of the winners with their gift cards for $5,000 in free groceries.
Sponsored by 14 agricultural groups and agribusiness organizations, the "Free Groceries for a Year!" sweepstakes was designed to help consumers connect with the farm families who grow their food.

"It was a very worthwhile cause to put a face on agriculture and let the urban consumers know what we do on a daily basis and how we go about producing their food supply," said Missouri Corn Merchandising Council board member Rob Korff.
Currently, consumers can register for an "Ultimate At-Home Tailgate Party."  In this new sweepstakes, residents have a chance to win a prize package that includes a flat screen television, a BBQ grill and approximately $750 in grocery gift cards.  The registration form is available at www.farmersfeedus.org by selecting Missouri as the state.

Sponsoring Missouri agriculture groups for the sweepstakes include the Missouri Pork Association, Missouri Beef Industry Council, Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, Missouri Dairy Growth Council, Missouri Soybean Association, Midwest Dairy Association, FCS Financial, Missouri Agribusiness Association (MO-AG), The Missouri Egg Council, Missouri Cattlemen's Association, MFA Incorporated, Monsanto, St. Louis Agribusiness Club and the Kansas City Agribusiness Council.

To learn more about Missouri farmers, or register to win the "Ultimate At-Home Tailgate Party" visit, www.farmersfeedus.org.

Book Review

Doing It Yourself: A Guide to Freezing, Curing &
Smoking Meat, Fish, & Game
By Wilbur F. Eastman

From such an unwieldy title comes a straightforward book that does just what its title suggests. What interested us in the book was what seems to be the lost art of canning meat. Many Today’s Farmer readers will recall the cellar or basement shelves being lined with Mason jars of canned meat. And many will recall the savory smell of that beef being heated for a winter’s meal.

">This book assumes its reader to be a novice, and provides simple instructions about what’s needed in materials and technique for home meat preservation. If you want to can meat like grandma did, the instructions here will get you from start to finish.

Chapters that provide instructions on processing meat are organized by species and include several recipes. From canning minced meat in the beef section to a nice blood sausage in the pork section, recipes in this book will remind you that our ancestry made little waste on the farm.

">If you put a side of beef in the freezer every year or pick up a hog at the 4-H fair, get this book well in advance of visiting the meat processor. After a quick read, and with some nostalgia for forgotten farm favorites, you might just change your processing order.

The Jefferson City MFA Agri Services recently upgraded its fleet with a new fertilizer tender truck. The 2002 Mack with a new 16-foot, four-bay hopper replaced what MFA employees call a “well-used” tender truck that had been in service for about 20 years. Drivers and managers alike look forward to the increased dependability and efficiency of the new truck. And with a view like this nearby, we thought we’d share the picture.
