A how-to for 4-H and FFA livestock project

The Jackson MFA Agri Services sponsored a calf fitting clinic recently. Area extension specialist Roger Eakins helped organize the event. With 15 years of personal show experience, Eakins spoke of his respect for youth programs. "I enjoy working with 4-H and FFA kids because I've seen the discipline that working with livestock teaches," he said. "These kids really have a work ethic and become self-starters. They just know what to do."
At the clinic, 4-H and FFA livestock students saw a heifer fitted in the morning and were able to clip their own calves in the afternoon-with help from leaders and experienced fitters.
Dustin Meyer, a student at Mineral Area College, performed clipping for the morning demonstration. "I enjoy fitting calves and have been doing all my own clipping since I was 10 years old," said Meyer. "You can have a really good calf and make it be the best one in the ring. That is fun."
Three videos of the clinic are available at http://www.youtube.com/todaysfarmer.
